Lawful Family Exceptions
Illegal Possession of a Handgun by a Juvenile
While state law prohibits unmonitored handgun possession by persons under 17 years of age, explicit statutory exceptions protect lawful youth hunting, target shooting, and family instruction.
π‘ Statutory Youth Exceptions
A minor under 17 may lawfully handle firearms when: 1) Attending a hunter safety or firearm safety course, 2) Target shooting at an established range, 3) Hunting with a valid license, or 4) On private land under the direct supervision of a parent, guardian, or qualified adult.
